rock balance holistic healthGood health isn’t just about the physical body. Our mind and body are linked and affect each other in more ways than we think. A holistic health approach is what I use for self-care.  The balance of body, mind, and spirit is what I think health and wellness are all about.

This site is about bringing awareness to the importance of self-care. Learn new modalities to support you. Create curiosity so that you investigate on your own what works for you. Everything is about finding new tools that you may be able to use and to learn to listen to your body.

To feel well you need to nurture your whole self, meaning your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs. Dr. Bill Sears’ LEAN program focuses more on the body. Personal experiences have shown me the power of the mind, the spirit and that we are much affected by energy.

I believe in self-care, preventive medicine, energy medicine, ancient medicine, environmental medicine and western medicine. There’s now a lifestyle medicine promoted by western doctors with a preventive mindset. They all have their time and approach in our lives.

energy medicine mindfulnessAlbert Einstein once said: “Concerning matter, we have been all wrong. What we have called matter is energy, whose vibration has been so lowered as to be perceptible to the senses. There is no matter.” I think he meant to say that everything is energy.

Energy is everywhere and we are all connected and affected by each other. Deepak Chopra is not someone I follow but a lot of people do. His wellness center is a short driving distance from my home. His 7 Tips for Mind-Body Balance, beautifully explains our connection with everything and he provides some tips for cultivating balance.

Chopra says: “Each of us is an inseparable part of an infinite field of intelligence, and in this very moment, with every breath, we are exchanging millions of atoms with the universe. He says that health isn’t merely the absence of disease or symptoms. Health is a state of optimal well-being, vitality, and wholeness. Illness develops when there is a disruption or a blockage of energy.

woman breathing happiness health Eating is our second most vital bodily function after breathing. We can go days without eating (even without water) but not without breathing (unless you are a yogi who has mastered the breath).

We take breathing for granted but there’s so much healing power when done in a mindful way. It is such a great tool for self-care and the foundation of any meditation. There are so many breathing techniques! Kundalini yoga is an example of a type of yoga that focuses on the breath for healing.

Have an open mind. Find what works for you. It is all about practicing self-care to be and to feel well. Genetics also plays a role in our health as well as unexpected events but taking care of ourselves is a key to happiness.

You may want to check Andrew Weil, MD, Three Breathing Exercises. See if you can incorporate one of his breathing techniques or find your own on YouTube.

My Latina roots are something that brings me great joy and pride at many levels. It also taught me to have an open mind about taking care of my health.  In Colombia, you can find a natural health pharmacy in almost every supermarket. Latinos believe in the power of the earth and plants for health and the power of prayer for healing. The word “curandero” (a) is Spanish for a healer.

If all you know is Western medicine, keep in mind that Western medicine is less than one thousand years old and its use is primarily reactive with countless side effects as you can see by the many commercials on TV. Ancient types of medicine can go back five thousand years and their use is primarily preventive and can be used for healing too, for example, acupuncture.

Feeling well is about practicing self-care and enjoying a good life. Be the captain of your health. Learn to ask your doctor, “What can I do?” instead of “What can I take? You will train your doctor to think about what to advise instead of what to prescribe.
